Delaware's Bancroft Construction takes metal and concrete to the next level

It’s cliché for companies to say they raise the bar in their workplace. But at one Delaware business, the company takes that seriously.

Bancroft Construction raises bars, beams — you name it. And they do it well.

Bancroft Construction company's efforts earned it first place in the midsize category in The News Journal's Top Delaware Workplaces competition for 2022. The Wilmington company has consecutively ranked among the state's top workplaces over the last six years, moving up from second place in 2021.

The secret to cultivating a culture of success at Bancroft begins with its staff of 140 employees across locations in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

“We invest in our team members through the Bancroft Learning Institute, committees, activities, award programs, team-building opportunities and much more,” the company wrote in a statement.

“Our team members live through our guiding principles, which drive our thoughts, behaviors and actions daily and have awarded us multiple safety awards and a top place to work.”

The premier construction company is currently working on multiple Delaware projects, which feature brief overviews on its website.

One example is the FinTech Building at the University of Delaware’s Science, Technology and Advanced Research Campus. The project includes the construction of a six-story, 100,000-square-foot building.

The Mt. Cuba Center Master Plan project in Hockessin includes building a 9,000-square-foot greenhouse and a 7,000-square-foot headhouse and a 73-space parking lot.

Bancroft is also working on the 20,000-square-foot Sussex County Public Safety Building in Georgetown that will be constructed as an addition to the existing Emergency Operations Center and includes renovations to the existing facility.

The River House Development project in Wilmington involves the development of 300 market-rate apartment units, plus high-end amenities, along the Christina River.

Although the pandemic presented hurdles for Bancroft, the company worked swiftly to overcome the challenges that the lockdown offered.

“At Bancroft, the goal is to be better. We never stray from our guiding principles, which keep us committed to continuous improvement while providing best-in-class construction management services,” the company wrote in a statement.

For example, Bancroft’s Safety and Organizational Development teams created jobsite protocols, rotating office team assignments, along with a daily health-risk assessment to help limit the exposure of COVID-19 among its employees, clients and trade partners.

The construction company’s origin begins with Stephen M. Mockbee Builders in 1975. Bancroft has experienced over 46 years of continuous growth, according to its website.
