ONAWAY – It was a positive start to the season for head coach John George’s Onaway Lady Cardinals, who were stellar defensively in a 41-20 victory over Posen in their recent season opener at home.

“Pretty big win for us to start the season,” said George. “Posen has had our number the last few years, so it felt good to double them up in our home opener. I thought we looked pretty good offensively. We played aggressive and made good decisions. In this game, at any given point, we had three sophomores and a freshman on the floor – we will be young but heading in the right direction.”

The Cardinals (1-0), who saw three different players hit double figures in scoring, were led by Kailyn George’s 12 points. Madilyn Crull and Charlotte Box had 11 and 10 points respectively. Aubrey Benson helped out with six points and Sydney Peel added two.

George credited the tenacious defense of his players, who shut down the Vikings for much of the contest.

“Defensively, I thought we were pretty good,” George said. “Our freshman, Marley Szymoniak, gave us great energy, along with speedster Madilyn Crull, and great rebounding from sophomore Ema DeMaestri propelled our defense to giving up only 20 on the night.”
