'Deeply saddened': Norwell High School student killed in Marshfield car crash

MARSHFIELD – A 17-year-old Norwell teenager was killed after the car he was riding in crashed into a tree on Forest Street early Sunday morning.

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said two other male teenagers were hurt in the single-car crash that happened at about 12:43 a.m. at 172 Forest St., which is near Marshfield High School.

Nicholas Wanderley, 17, of Norwell, was pronounced dead at the scene. He is a junior at Norwell High School. The 16-year-old driver was taken to Children’s Hospital in Boston for treatment. Another 16-year-old passenger was taken to South Shore Hospital with serious injuries.

"The Norwell community is deeply saddened," said Norwell High School Principal Marc Bender, in an email sent to students and parents Sunday afternoon. " ... Our thoughts and prayers go out to Nick’s parents and family during this time of loss and grief."

Grief counselors are set to be at the high school from 3 to 5 p.m. today to help students cope with the death of their classmate.

"Continued support will be provided this week," Bender wrote.

Police officers and firefighters found the three teenagers trapped inside an Audi sedan. The preliminary investigation shows the car was southbound on Forest Street when the driver crossed the double yellow line and hit a tree.

"In regards to this tragic accident on Forest Street in Marshfield early this morning our hearts go out to the children and families involved and the entire Norwell community," Marshfield Police Department posted Sunday on their Facebook page.

No further information on the crash is available. The Plymouth County district attorney’s office, Marshfield police, Norwell police and members of the State Police Crime Scene Services and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction sections are investigating.
