Daycare teacher fired over message written on toddler's stomach: 'Am I right to be furious?'

A Florida daycare teacher has been fired after allegedly using a toddler's stomach to send a message to his parents.

Heather Chisum, who lives on Sanibel Island, shared photos of her son, Milo, to Facebook on Monday that showed a black, marker-written message on his stomach. Chisum said the words, which read, "I'm out of diapers" had been written by a teacher at his daycare, Children's Education Center of the Islands, USA Today reports.

"I need opinions," Chisum's post read. "Am I right to be furious about this? Or am I over reacting? I really need your opinions guys, because I’m about to barge in this daycare tomorrow morning and have some words."

Chisum went on the explain that the daycare provides daily reports on its children, which it places inside their lunch box each day. The single mom said that she must have missed a message the previous day telling her Milo needed more diapers, suggesting the school decided to respond accordingly.

"If I failed to see that he needs diapers a simple, 'Hey Heather, your son needs diapers maybe you missed the report' would have done the trick," she wrote. "But instead, I change his diaper this afternoon AND SEE THIS WRITTEN ON MY SON WITH MARKER."

Chisum's post went viral immediately, and has now been shared more than 29,000 times. It also gained the attention of the daycare, which apologized on Tuesday in addition to sharing that it had fired the unnamed teacher.

"We are aware of the incident at the school, and we are terribly sorry for the distress it has caused the family involved as well as all of our families. It was a breach of our professional ethics on the part of the teacher," Cindy Carter DeCosta, the daycare's executive director told USA Today.

The Early Learning Coalition of Southwest Florida, which works with low-income and at-risk educational services — including the Children's Education Center of the Islands — also told USA Today it is investigating the incident to see if further action is required.

Meanwhile, Chisum said she's pulled both Milo and her other child from the daycare.

"I'm so beyond frustrated," she told USA Today. "I will no longer take them there."
