Daryl Morey, Sixers explain their offseason additions of PJ Tucker, others

CAMDEN, N.J.–The Philadelphia 76ers had a very busy offseason as they added some players who they believe will be able to help them move forward in their quest for a title.

After falling in Round 2 of the 2022 playoffs, the Sixers quickly identified some needs. They needed toughness, they needed shooting, and they needed players who can play both sides of the floor in order to complement their star duo of Joel Embiid and James Harden.

So, the Sixers went out and brought in the likes of PJ Tucker, De’Anthony Melton, and Danuel House Jr. who they believe will be able to help the team move forward.

“One thing coach identified that made things challenging in the playoffs, especially, was the lack of players who can play both sides of the ball which become more important in the playoffs,” said president Daryl Morey at media day on Monday. “That was a priority for Elton (Brand) and myself.”

Coach Doc Rivers, who is entering his third season with the Sixers, echoed Morey as he explained what he likes about the team’s offseason additions.

“I think they all will fit in well,” said Rivers. “Each one of them fulfills a need in a lot of ways. Shooting, PJ’s leadership, his toughness. De’Anthony Melton’s playing dual positions, great defensive player, great hands, toughness. I thought we had a targeted summer and we hit pretty much what we were looking for.”

Of course, the Sixers have to consider what to do with Tucker’s minutes. He will be in the starting lineup, but how many minutes will he play before the playoffs? He is 37 years old, after all.

“My eyes will be the judge of it,” Rivers added. “He’s important to us not only on the floor, but off the floor. I think his leadership is definitely needed so not concerned with it. PJ will tell you every second he’s not concerned with it so we’ll do the right thing.”
