It’s 1990s all over again, only this time it’s the Cowboys and not the Dolphins that are making musicians cry.

In one of the more random covers in recent memory, Post Malone has put his take on Hootie and the Blowfish’s hit “Only Wanna Be With You.” The artist, born Austin Post, is a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan and switched the lyric "I’m such a baby ‘cause the Dolphins make me cry” to "The Cowboys make me cry."

Of course in the original video from over 25 years ago, Hall of Fame Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino actually appeared alongside singer Darius Rucker. The jersey Rucker wore in the video is signed by Marino and framed in his house. “Only Wanna,” which wasn’t officially released as a single until 1995, appeared on the band’s debut album, “Cracked Rear View.”

As for Rucker’s response to the cover – well, he thought it was a touchdown.

“The smile in my face will not leave for a long time,” Rucker tweeted about Post Malone’s version. “This is awesome.”

Rucker knows a thing or two about great covers. He won a Grammy for his rendition of “Wagon Wheel.”

But of all songs, why did Malone’s pick this one? Because "the original record was last on the Billboard charts 25 years ago and Post recorded his version to help celebrate the 25th anniversary of Pokémon," according to a release. The video game and card franchise will mark its birthday with “Pokémon Day” on Saturday. A virtual concert with Malone (7 p.m. EST) will be streamed on the Pokémon YouTube and Twitch channels, along with its official website.

The cover is Malone’s first release as a lead artist since 2019’s “Hollywood's Bleeding,” which is up for album of the year at next month’s Grammys.
