Dancing track star and diving into the "Shadow Ward": Where The News Leads

Hello, and welcome to Where the News Leads! This weekly series will be centered around some of the stories we've written here at The News Leader.

It can be a space for us to respond to your comments and questions, drop cool tidbits that we had to cut from stories, or just look ahead at what's coming up in the Shenandoah Valley.

We first talk to youth, education, and sports reporter Patrick Hite about Summer Wallace, a decorated track star from Riverheads High School who also has a tremendous passion for dance and ballet!

Patrick talks a little bit about Summer's career in high school track and field, as well as her background in ballet. He spent some time following Summer through her day of winter track practice as well as ballet rehearsal, and we discuss the connection between the two passions.

That story will be out sometime next week, so be on the lookout!

After that, we welcome in storytelling and watchdog coach Jeffrey Schwaner to discuss the "Shadow Ward" series. The stories deal with voting in Staunton, and we highlight some of the things that we've discovered thanks to members of the community, as well as what we hope to discuss in the future as we continue releasing these stories.

Jeff also talks to us about why the story felt important for us to cover, and what really excites us about the series as we continue onward.
