Damaging winds possible Monday. What you need to know

The National Weather Service in Buffalo issued a wind advisory through Monday night throughout western New York as forecasters predict wind gusts up to 55 mph iin the Rochester region.

The advisory in Monroe County, which will be in effect between 10 p.m. Sunday through 10 p.m. Monday, predicts damaging winds that could topple trees and power lines, potentially causing some widespread power outages. Whipping winds could also damage outdoor holiday decorations, forecasters warned.

Sustained southwest winds between 25 and 35 mph are predicted.

In Ontario and Livingston counties, the advisory predicts gusts up to 50 mph and it runs through 7 p.m. Monday. In Wayne County, the advisory anticipates wind gusts up to 50 mph and it runs between 10 a.m. Monday and 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Weather Service Meteorologist Liz Jurkowski said that the wind "will really pick up around noontime" on Monday.

Rain showers are also expected on Monday. Jurkowski said that a warm front moving through the region overnight followed by a low pressure system moving through the great lakes on Monday will also cause temperatures to warm up to the mid 50s overnight and then drop to the low 30s by dinnertime on Monday.

Tuesday and Wednesday is expected to be cooler, with highs in the low 30s and a chance of snow both days, according to the Weather Service.
