How the D&C serves our readers during the holiday season

Dear D&C Subscribers --

The calendar never lies, and it's telling us the 2021 holiday season is upon us.

We just celebrated Thanksgiving with turkey and a Buffalo Bills victory.

Soon to follow are Christmas and Hanukkah, followed in quick succession by New Years Day 2022. At mid-year next year, believe it or not, we will be as close to the year 2045 going forward as we will be to the year 2000 looking backwards. Time indeed does fly.

At any rate, the holiday season is when Democrat and Chronicle reporters truly shine. One way or the other, these holidays are shared experiences for Rochesterians, and our various traditions and favorite local shopping spots and restaurants are front of mind for each of us.

You are seeing and will see plenty of coverage speaking to this fact. I call such news content "sense of place" stories. A Rochester reader wants to read about a Rochester-area bakery or florist or "Nutcracker" production, not about ones in Cleveland or Fresno.

Are such stories "serious news?" No, but they contain relevant and useful and appealing information that readers like to consume. Such stories have always been part of the Democrat and Chronicle and of our former afternoon paper The Times-Union; I fondly recall reading them as a child a half-century ago.

Two of our reporters, food, drink and culture reporter Tracy Schuhmacher and features writer Marcia Greenwood, got this ball rolling with a subscriber-only story about newer businesses to check out if you are a local native returning for the holidays.

Among the eateries Schuhmacher and Greenwood highlight are the Peach Blossom (Mexican), Bite Rochester (in Innovation Square at the base of the Xerox Tower) and The Richmond (located in the same spot as the once-popular Richmond's off of East Main Street).

We have a lot more holiday-related stories in the works ranging from things to do to places to shop to places to order your favorite holiday treats. We hope you enjoy them, and that you have a happy and safe holiday season!

Each week, usually on Sunday evenings, we email you highlights of our reporting and videography created exclusively for our subscribers. And we'll share with you some "behind-the-scenes" tidbits on how such journalism comes to be.

Below are some other stories written you may have missed this month.

Thank you for your continuing support of local news in Rochester. We’re greatly appreciative.

Sincerely,

Michael Kilian
