CWLP sends two teams to Florida for hurricane assistance

City Water, Light and Power sent a pair of four-man teams to Orlando this week to help crews there maintain the area's power grid, as Hurricane Ian approached the Florida coast.

CWLP spokesperson Amber Sabin said the teams, plus supervisor Carl Tega, left Tuesday for a stint assisting the Orlando Utilities Commission as it deals with storm-related outages. The teams were scheduled to arrive in Orlando Wednesday, as the hurricane continued to strengthen into a powerful Category 5 storm.

The OUC covers 400,000 residents across the Orlando metropolitan area, including large portions of Orlando, St. Cloud and unincorporated Orange and Osceola counties.

Sabin said it is unknown how long the teams will remain in Florida after the storm.

Ian was scheduled to make landfall on the southwest coast of Florida on Wednesday afternoon, bringing heavy rains, large storm surges and winds in excess of 150 mph.
