Cue the 'Curb' music: Comedian Larry David says he told Jets GM to draft Lamar Jackson

Sometimes the NFL can over-complicate things.

A famous comedian had a brilliant idea for the New York Jets. Larry David, the co-creator of “Seinfeld” and the creator and star of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” is a big Jets fan. That helps explain why David’s character on “Curb” is constantly defeatist and finding himself in messy situations.

David said he talked to then-Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan before the 2018 draft and told him he should draft Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson. The Jets, of course, did not listen.

Larry David had good advice for the Jets

David probably isn’t above telling a good story that’s not entirely rooted in accuracy, but let’s roll with this tale because it’s hilarious.

In an interview with Michael Kay of the YES Network, David said that before the 2018 draft he called Maccagnan and told him to draft Jackson. The Jets instead took Sam Darnold in the first round. Jackson fell to the 32nd pick, was selected by the Baltimore Ravens, and will win the NFL MVP award this season.

Not that GMs should listen to random advice from outsiders on who to draft — though the urban legend of a homeless man convincing Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam to draft Johnny Manziel will never die — but David was actually onto something.

Jets GM ‘laughed’ at Lamar Jackson suggestion

What was Maccagnan’s reaction when David told him he should draft Jackson? He was “condescending,” David said.

“He laughed at me, but who can blame him?” David said on the YES Network interview. “Nobody thought Jackson was going to be good.”

Well, that’s a win for the common fan. Not that Darnold is a bust, but Jackson has revolutionized the NFL and led the Ravens to the league’s best record this season. Maccagnan got fired this past offseason after a power struggle with coach Adam Gase.

The moral to the story seems to be clear. If you have a celebrity comedian among your fan base and he or she offers draft advice, listen and make the pick.
