Crystal Clear Ice Forms on Lake Superior

Subzero temperatures froze a layer of crystal clear, inches-thick ice over an area of Lake Superior in Munising, Michigan, on February 1, giving locals a view of the freezing waters below.

“Many lifelong local residence have never seen the lake freeze over in such a manner,” Chelsey Lynn Tweedale told Storyful.

Tweedale took this footage capturing the spectacle, saying she had never seen it both thick enough to walk across and clear enough to see through.

“[The] ice was approximately five-six inches thick at the time, making it stable enough for people to walk, ice skate, and ice fish on,” she said. Credit: Chelsey Lynn Tweedale via Storyful
