Crowd Under Fire in Yangon on Bloodiest Day of Myanmar Protests
At least 18 people were killed as police opened fire on protesters in several cities in Myanmar on February 28, the United Nations said. It was the bloodiest day since protests against the military coup began at the start of the month.
This footage was described by the source, News Watch TV, as showing police shooting at protesters at Hledan Road in Yangon. As the shots ring out off camera, protesters are seen using makeshift shields as they try to pull wounded people out of the street.
Other witness video seen by Storyful showed a wounded man being treated at the same location.
According to Frontier Myanmar, at least four people were killed in Yangon on Sunday. This included at least two in the Hledan Road area.
“Deaths reportedly occurred as a result of live ammunition fired into crowds in Yangon, Dawei, Mandalay, Myeik, Bago and Pokokku,” a UN Human Rights Office spokesman said.
Mass arrests were also reported, and attacks on the press. The AP said on March 1 that one of its journalists had been arrested.
