Crews respond to apartment fire on historic Walnut Street in Springfield

Several fire trucks responded to the scene Wednesday afternoon of a fire at an apartment building on historic Walnut Street in Springfield.

The fire was reported just after 4 p.m. Smoke and flames could be seen coming from the top floor of the Walnut Manor Apartments.

Firefighters were seen going in and out of the building, and crews had Walnut Street blocked off in both directions throughout the evening.

Kevin Trogdon with the Springfield Fire Department said there had not been any reported injuries as of Wednesday evening.

Trogdon said the building sustained significant damage and was likely a total loss. He was not aware exactly how many residents would be impacted.

Trogdon said the Springfield Fire Department dispatched essentially all available resources to the fire because of its size and the potential for other nearby buildings being impacted. As a result, Springfield had to call on neighboring fire departments to help cover the city.
