CPD squad car hit by Metra train in Elmwood Park

An unmarked Chicago police squad car was hit by a Metra train Saturday afternoon in Elmwood Park and an officer was taken to a hospital for nonlife threatening injuries, according to Chicago police.

Around 5 p.m., the squad car was hit in the 7700 block of West Grand Avenue, police said. When asked if the officer was on-duty, police spokesman Ofc. Anthony Spicuzza said that information was not immediately available.

Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said the crash occurred at the railroad track crossing on Grand Avenue. The train engineer said that the crossing gates were activated when the crash occurred, but it was still under investigation.

The train had about 100 passengers and left downtown Chicago at 4:30 p.m. and was originally scheduled to arrive in Elgin at 5:45 p.m., Reile said. No one on the train was injured.

The train was stopped for 76 minutes due to the crash, Reile said.
