Covid cases continue to decline in North Huntingdon-Irwin area from Feb. 22 to March 1, 2021

Mar. 2—The spread of coronavirus in the North Huntingdon-Irwin-North Irwin area continued to lessen during the last week in February, with only 43 new confirmed cases from Feb. 22 to March 1, according to data the state Department of Health on Monday.

The four ZIP codes covering North Huntingdon, Irwin, North Irwin, Westmoreland City, Ardara and Larimer saw just a 1.6% increase in confirmed cases in those seven days, increasing to 2,724, from 2,681 as of Feb. 22, based on the health department data. The downward trend in the number of new cases and percentage of new cases has continued since early February.

The case count is from the beginning of the covid pandemic that reached the region, which has a population of about 35,000 people.

There were 1,258 probable but not confirmed cases, an increase of just 32 cases. Since corona virus testing began last year, there have been 11,455 negative test results, an increase of 200 in those four ZIP codes since Feb. 22.

In the North Huntingdon-Irwin-North Irwin 15642 ZIP code, there were 2,620 confirmed cases, 1,230 probable but not confirmed covid cases and 11,094 negative test results. The 15642 ZIP code also covers parts of Penn Township and Hempfield Township, but not sections of the township bordering Trafford or White Oak.

There were 63 confirmed covid cases in the Westmoreland City 15692 ZIP code, 18 probable cases and 214 negative test results.

In the Ardara 15615 ZIP code, there were 25 confirmed cases, five probable and 71 negative test results.

There were 16 confirmed cases in the Larimer 15647 ZIP code, five probable cases and 76 negative test results.

Norwin said there were two Sunset Valley Elementary students who last week reported testing positive for coronavirus and one middle school student, as well as a high school staff member. That is down from the 10 students and one staff member who reported testing positive for the week from Feb. 22 to 28.
