On Friday afternoon, Prime Minister Justin Turdeau and his wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau popped into a Rexall Pharmacy minutes away from Parliament Hill to get their first doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
“I am very excited,” said Trudeau, laughing seconds before he received his first dose.
The Prime Minister shared some images of the inoculation a few hours later insisting that he was glad he went ahead and got vaccinated.
“It was our turn to get vaccinated today, so that’s what Sophie and I did - and we’re glad we did it!” he wrote on his Twitter account.
He added that he was grateful to the staff at the Rexall who vaccinated him and valued their work.
“To the workers who vaccinated us this afternoon, and to those who are helping vaccinate people right across the country: thank you. The work you’re doing couldn’t be more important or more appreciated - and it certainly won’t be forgotten,” he wrote in a following tweet,
The photo opportunity saw Trudeaus in a more light-hearted manner, as the PM received his shot first with his wife firmly gripping his hand.
Trudeau offered to reciprocate to his wife and hold her hand, but in an amusing way, Gregoire Trudeau brushed the PM’s hand away. He responded with an audible “awe” and chuckle. The moment has received a lot of positive attention online about the playfulness between the couple.
Other major political figures like NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh got inoculated a few days ago, with Singh getting his shot from a family doctor in Ottawa. Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole is scheduled to get his vaccine sometime this weekend.
