COVID-19 Monday update: Hendrick Health hospitalizations down slightly, but more in ICU

Hendrick Health on Friday reported 110 COVID-19 inpatients, with 25 in ICU, compared to 111 COVID inpatients and 20 in ICU, as reported Wednesday.

The breakdown by facilities Friday was 92 inpatients at Abilene hospitals (20 in ICU), and 18 inpatients (5 in ICU) at the Brownwood hospital.

Of the 110 Hendrick COVID-19 inpatients, 74 were not fully vaccinated.

The percentage of COVID-19 inpatients in the 16-county Abilene trauma service area increased to 18.77% Sunday, up from 18.07% Saturday and 17.39% Friday, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services COVID-19 database.

The Abilene trauma service area Sunday had 161 COVID-19 inpatients, four more than reported Saturday. In the previous 24 hours, there were 23 COVID-19 admissions in the area, according to the state database.

The Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District on Monday reported COVID-19 data for Thursday, including 415 new cases.

Of the new cases, 182 were confirmed via polymerase chain reaction tests.

Active cases as of Thursday totaled 5,354 (1,705 PCR cases and 3,649 based on antigen tests), compared to 4,992 reported Wednesday and 3,423 a week previous.

Brown County adds 7 deaths, more than 1,100 cases over last week

BROWNWOOD – Brown County health officials reported seven deaths and 1,108 new COVID-19 cases for the week ending Jan. 21, up from 1,024 new cases and five deaths reported the previous week.

The deceased are two men in their 60s, one man in his 70s, one woman in her 80s, one woman in her 90s and two men in their 90s. The total number of county deaths linked to the coronavirus is 212.

Through the first three weeks of January, Brown County has reported 2,692 new COVID-19 cases, compared to 365 in the entire month of December, and 134 in November.

The percentage of county residents aged 5 and older who are fully vaccinated is 42.61%, compared to 42.44% the previous report.

The current totals for COVID-19 testing in Brown County as of Friday were:

  • Total negative: 10,398

  • Cases confirmed by PCR test: 4,319

  • Cases confirmed by antigen test: 5,910

  • Deaths: 212

Abilene ISD: Reported Monday afternoon 27 new cases (21 students, six staff) in the previous 24 hours, with active cases totaling 492 (324 students, 168 staff) compared to 929 Friday afternoon. Since Aug. 3, the district has reported 2,952 cases (2,140 students, 812 staff).

New cases by campus: One student at Abilene High; one student at Craig Middle; one student at Mann Middle; four students, one staff at Alcorta Elementary; three students, one staff at Austin Elementary; one student at Bonham Elementary; one staff at Bowie Elementary; one staff at Dyess Elementary; five students, one staff at Purcell Elementary; five students at Taylor Elementary; and one staff in transportation

Wylie ISD: Reported Monday 38 new cases (32 students, six staff), with 314 active cases, the same number reported Friday.

Abilene Christian University: Reported Friday 15 new cases, with 50 active cases, 28 fewer than were reported Thursday. Cumulative cases since Aug. 17 total 561.
