COVID-19: Abilene-area inpatients increase Monday

The Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District reported Monday three COVID-19-linked deaths, 39 new cases and 33 recoveries.

The total number of county deaths connected to the coronavirus is 574.

Active cases total 574 (137 confirmed by polymerase chain reaction tests and 437 from antigen tests). A week ago, active cases numbered 567.

Hendrick Health reported Monday 55 COVID-19 inpatients, with 15 in ICU. On the last report Wednesday, there were 48 COVID-19 inpatients, including 11 in ICU.

The breakdown Monday by facilities was 49 inpatients at the Abilene hospitals (13 in ICU), and six at the Brownwood hospital (two in ICU).

Of the 55 Hendrick COVID-19 inpatients, 45 were not fully vaccinated.

The percentage of COVID-19 inpatients in the 16-county Abilene trauma service area was 7% of total capacity Sunday, compared to 6.93% Saturday and 6.37% Friday, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services COVID-19 database.

The Abilene trauma service area Monday had 64 COVID-19 inpatients, compared to 44 on the last report Wednesday. The state also reported Monday that eight admissions were made in the previous 24 hours.

Across Texas, hospitalizations totaled 2,796 on Monday, compared to 2,692 a week ago. Active cases on Monday numbered 65,221, compared to 67,278 a week ago.

SCHOOLS, COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

Abilene ISD: Reported Monday five new cases (three students and two staff members). Active cases by campus: one student each at Bowie Elementary, Purcell Elementary and Ward Elementary and two staff members at Austin Elementary.

Active cases total 10 (seven students, three staff members), which is 30 fewer than the last update on Nov. 19. Since Aug. 3, the district has reported 1,273 cases (1,038 students, 235 staff members).

Wylie ISD: Reported Monday two new student cases at Wylie High, for a total of two active cases in the district. Before the Thanksgiving break, active cases totaled 18.

Abilene Christian University: Reported Monday nine new cases, for a total of 12 active cases. Of the active cases, 41.7% are unvaccinated. Due to possible exposure, two people are in quarantine. Cumulative cases since Aug. 17 total 188.
