COVID-19 deaths declining in NEPA

Jun. 16—The seven-county Northeast Pennsylvania region has seen three or fewer daily COVID-19 deaths for 12 days in a row.

That's the longest such streak since a period that extended from July 8 to Oct. 29.

It's also the latest sign the number of COVID-19 deaths has begun to catch up with the weekslong decline in new cases.

The state Department of Health reported 24 new deaths Tuesday with one in the region.

In all, COVID-19 has killed or contributed to the deaths of 27,514 Pennsylvanians, including 1,875 in the region that includes Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties.

The state reported another 453 new cases, raising the total to 1,209,136, or 9.4% of the state's population. In the region, 78,119 have had the virus, about 9% of its population.

The numbers may be lower than normal because reporting of weekend case totals often lags.

By county:

Lackawanna added nine cases for 18,509 total, including 2,901 probable, and remained at 480 deaths.

Luzerne added nine cases for 32,021 total, including 2,607 probable. One new death raised the total to 822.

Monroe added six cases for 14,783 total, including 465 probable, and remained at 321 deaths.

Pike added two cases for 4,020 cases, including 432 probable, and remained at 54 deaths.
