Council to consider approving firm for designing new groundwater storage tank
Apr. 18—The Mitchell City Council will meet Monday to consider approving an engineering firm to design the new groundwater storage tank.
Infrastructure Design Group is being recommended to complete the design of the new 2.5 million gallon groundwater storage tank, along with providing bidding services. The council will consider approving the engineering firm for the design work at a cost not to exceed $720,180 during the 6 p.m. meeting at City Hall.
According to City Engineer Joe Schroeder's memo in the council agenda, the tank is proposed to be 110 feet in diameter with 35 foot sidewalls. The storage tank will be constructed on 10 acres of land that the city recently purchased north of Highway 37, near the 256th Street intersection.
A pump station and chemical feed facility will also be placed on the site, Schroeder noted in his memo. The design will also include incorporating a separate pressure zone for the southern portion of the city to address low pressure, additional piping at the current water treatment facility to allow for a bypass and demolition of the Burr Street elevated storage tank. Infrastructure Design Group will also assist the city with securing SRF funding for the project.
During a recent City Council meeting, Public Works Director Kyle Croce said the construction of a 2.5 million gallon groundwater storage tank is estimated at a cost of roughly $5 million.
"We have investigated our problem of a single-source water supply by B-Y, and when we compared our water supply source compared to other first-class municipalities in the state, they are showing they have two supply sources, whereas we have one," Croce said.
The city's lone water supply source comes from B-Y Water District, which transports the city's water from the Missouri River. According to Croce, most of the state's first class municipalities or like-sized cities have a two- to three-day water supply storage capacity. However, Mitchell's water supply has a one-day storage capacity.
Croce alluded to potential water main breaks and issues with the city's single supply source as a critical reason for the city to build a groundwater storage tank. The tank would provide Mitchell with a two-day storage capacity, Croce said. If the project is approved in the future, the groundwater storage tank would be constructed on the south side of Interstate 90.
"It would also give us the average daily demand from 2.5 million gallons to up to $5 million. That would get us through any breaks that we anticipate with a single-source line," Croce said.
