Cory Joseph ready to join Canada for FIBA World Cup camp

Most of the latest news surrounding the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup lately has been about who isn’t playing.

A long line of American players are skipping duty to play for Team USA, and even Canada has seen NBA talents like R.J. Barrett, Andrew Wiggins and Tristan Thompson decline the invitation to help qualify for the 2020 Olympics.

There is some positive news for the team, at long last. Along with reigning NBA champion head coach Nick Nurse of the Toronto Raptors at the helm, point guard Cory Joseph is among those willing to put on the maple leaf.

“Cory Joseph is in and ready to go,” Nurse said in an interview with CBC Sports.

The former Raptor and current Sacramento Kings guard has played 52 games with Team Canada — he averaged 6.5 points and 3.9 assists in just over 25 minutes per game with the Indiana Pacers last season.

“I expect us to do what a lot of my teams do, which is move up and down positionally,” Nurse added as a look at how the team may be forced the adjust based on who is and isn’t available to line up.

Aside from confirming that Thompson and Dwight Powell will not be a part of Canada’s roster, Nurse added that Barrett will be present at training camp but not participating.

Team Canada camp begins on Monday, with the first exhibition game against Nigeria on Wednesday in Toronto.
