Coroner identifies all five victims in crash near Salton Sea
All five people who died Saturday when the car they were traveling in crashed into a semi near the Salton Sea have been identified.
The Riverside County Coroner on Sunday identified Hernan Montes-Hernandez, 23, of Palm Springs, and Alexa Xiomara Felix-Reyes, 26, of Thermal as victims in the crash. Other victims who previously had been identified are: Victor Manuel Marmolejo-Cuarenta, 24, of Coachella; Matteo Emmanuel Robledo-Felix, 7, of Thermal; and Ariadne Isabella Robledo-Felix, 6 of Thermal.
The crash occurred at around 5:15 p.m. at the intersection of 81st Avenue and State Route 86 in Oasis.
As the Jetta was driving eastbound on 81st Avenue and entered the intersection, it failed to yield to a semi that was driving southbound on State Route 86, causing the semi to collide with the Jetta's left side. Riverside County Fire Department reported that the people inside the Jetta became trapped and had to be extricated from the Jetta. All five occupants were later pronounced dead at the scene.
California Highway Patrol said the driver of the semi was not injured and not under the influence at the time of the crash. Information on the driver of the Jetta has yet to be provided.
Update, Jan. 31, 2022: Due to incorrect information initially provided by the Riverside County coroner, an earlier version of this article contained a different spelling of Victor Marmolejo-Cuarenta's name. The coroner's office said it has updated its records.
Previous reporting by Paul Albani-Burgio is included in this report.
