Coronavirus in Tampa Bay schools: a weekly update
Coronavirus cases are on the rise again in all four Tampa Bay area school districts after slowing in the weeks after spring break.
Below is a county-by-county look at schools that reported four or more cases. (Those with three cases or fewer are recorded in the interactive map.)
Hernando County: The area’s northernmost county reported 25 cases this week. The larger numbers were in Springstead High, which had five, and Weeki Wachee High, which had four.
Hillsborough County: The numbers rose in the area’s largest district, fueled by 12 cases at Gaither High and 12 in the school district offices.
There were 10 cases each at Durant High, Roland Park K-8 and Tampa Residential Facilities, a Department of Juvenile Justice program for high-risk teens.
Pinecrest Elementary and Sligh Middle School each had seven cases.
These schools reported six cases each: Davis Elementary and Brandon, Lennard, Leto, Newsome, Steinbrenner and Sumner high schools.
These campuses had five cases each: Mulrennan and Shields middle schools, and Armwood, Blake, Riverview, Robinson and Strawberry Crest high schools.
These schools had four cases each: Gorrie, Mango, Nelson and Wimauma elementary schools; Jennings and Marshall middle schools, Henderson Hammock Charter, and Jefferson, Plant and Tampa Bay Tech high schools.
Pasco County: The case count rose past 100 again in Pasco, finishing at 118 for the week.
J.W. Mitchell High had by far the most cases, with 10. There were seven among virtual students in the MySchool Online program. River Ridge and Wiregrass Ranch high schools each had six cases. Hudson High reported five cases. And there were four each at John Long Middle and Cypress Elementary.
Pinellas County: Most of the 112 cases reported by the district between Monday and Thursday were scattered, with no more than two per school.
These were the exceptions: Hollins High and John Hopkins Middle each had six cases. Osceola Middle, Clearwater High and Northeast High each had five cases. There were four cases each at Boca Ciega High and at East Lake High, which leads the district year-to-date with 137 cases.
The total for the week across all four counties was 587 cases, with more expected when Pinellas reports Friday’s numbers. The total count so far this year is 14,218 cases.
Colleges and universities:
Since April 2, the University of South Florida reported that five students and six employees across the school’s campuses have tested positive. Cases listed are those that have been reported to the university and those who test positive at the Student Health Center.
Over the same time period, the University of Tampa has reported 17 student cases and one employee case. St. Petersburg College reported 11 cases across its 13 campuses and Hillsborough Community College reported nine cases across its four campuses. Eckerd College reported two active cases among residential students this week.
