A company has made good on its promise to restore a historic house in Madisonville – and then some.

PLK Communities pledged to spend at least $500,000 to rehabilitate the Stewart House when it successfully lobbied to build a 150-unit apartment complex at the corner of Madison Road and Stewart Avenue, where the nearly 200-year-old house stands.

The Kenwood company ended up spending more than $1 million to rehabilitate the Stewart House that now serves as the clubhouse and leasing offices for the complex named The Jameson.

PLK Communities also convinced Cincinnati City Council to designate the house an official city historic landmark, joining the likes of the Harriet Beecher Stowe House, King Records, Music Hall and Union Terminal.

Nick Lingenfelter, vice president of development for PLK, said the company took great care to preserve and protect every historic detail of the Stewart House for generations to come.

He said PLK also worked with neighbors of the house, community groups and government officials to win the Cincinnati historic landmark designation.

“This is truly an asset to the community and PLK is proud to partner with them to help us all reach our goals with the development there,” Lingenfelter said.

The Greek Revival-style Stewart House is believed to have been built in 1838, when the property was sold to Benjamin Stewart, a successful lumber businessman.

It’s the first building to be designated a Cincinnati historic landmark among 12 buildings in the Madison-Stewart Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

The Jameson complex was completed in December 2021 at a cost of about $18 million.
