Community partnerships inspire students during Aiken STEAM Week

Aug. 8—Aiken STEAM Week was hosted Aug. 1-5 by True To Your SOLE, Sky Is The Limit Foundation and Second Baptist Church in collaboration with Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic (NIWC Atlantic).

The week culminated with Aiken STEAM Day at Second Baptist held Saturday, Aug. 6, which consisted of 27 exhibitors impacting right under 1,000 people.

The chance to showcase this opportunity in the CSRA was a huge success, said Marcus Schoultz with NIWC Atlantic.

"This week was very special for me," Schoultz said. "Having the opportunity to come back to my hometown and impact and inspire the community on the opportunities in STEAM was so impactful for me. Our goal is to always impact, inspire and lead our current and future generations."

The week consisted of more than 50 students having the ability to learn how to develop a website. Each student spoke about their goals and their hobbies. The students were able to take those thoughts and program their website.

The Aiken STEM Week camp hosted a different industry partner each day, allowing the students to interact and learn about the opportunities across the world and in the CSRA.

Industry partners included: South Carolina Department of Education, Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness (CNTA), Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL) and Boeing.

Aiken STEAM Day attendees had the opportunity to interact with companies and organizations about jobs, apprenticeships, higher education career paths and more.

Schoultz said 2023 Aiken STEAM Week plans are already underway so residents should stay tuned.
