Colon graduate Jaden Adams will be staying close to home the next few years.

Adams, who just graduated this year from Colon High School, will be continuing her academic and softball careers with Glen Oaks Community College. She signed on with the Vikings earlier this year.

“I like the team, they were very welcoming and seem like very nice people,” Adams said. “I feel like I could grow there and be a better player while also furthering my education.”

Doug Tew was the Colon softball coach for Adams’ senior season. He said her abilities on the field will certainly help at the next level.

“What great character and a great person, she’s willing to do anything for the team,” he said. “She’s the type of college athlete every coach wants. She’s willing to do anything for the team and work to continue to get better.”

Adams is a solid catcher behind the plate, where she can control the game in front of her. But many times this past season, Adams played multiple positions to help Colon be the best team they could be. Several games saw her play at shortstop as well.

Adams said she’s willing to play anywhere in college as well. Players are recruited to play specific positions mostly, but there are often players who can come in and help a team at multiple spots. Adams believes she can be that type of player.

“Honestly, I have always been driven to play softball,” she said. “It’s been a dream to go to college and play softball and I will play wherever I can on the field.”

This past year, Adams was not entirely sure playing in college would happen. But then she made the ultimate decision to pursue her talents at the next level and Glen Oaks made a great fit.

She remains positive that she made the right decision.

“I’m most looking forward to continuing to play softball,” she said. “I love it.”

Adams will continue to live at home, which is not a lengthy trip out to the GOCC campus. It will be an interesting adjustment for her, because she’s spent her entire life in Colon Community Schools.

“I’ll miss the teachers and the students, I’ve been here my whole life so it’s kinda scary to know that I’m not going to be coming back,” she said. “I think it will be a healthy experience for me, though.”

Adams will be studying Psychology while in college. She chose Psychology, she said, because she is curious about how the human mind works and how people act.

“It fascinates me,” she said. “I want to learn about why we do the things we do.”

Her plan is to attend Glen Oaks for two years while playing softball, then transferring to a four-year school.
