College volleyball: 'Jackets, Saints set to start unprecedented spring season

Feb. 26—Wisconsin-Superior is set to play Northland in its spring season opener at 7 p.m. Saturday at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

UWS is coming off a 16-19 record and 5-3 mark in conference play. The Yellowjackets return two seniors in Elise Ertl and Megan Holz, who led the team with 549 assists, an average of 4.19 assists per set in the fall of 2019.

Saturday's match will be considered nonconference.

The UMAC's first spring volleyball season will begin Saturday, March 6, with all nine conference teams competing in an eight-game round robin followed by a nine-team UMAC tournament starting April 5.

UWS will follow its season opener with another nonconference match against Northland at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, in Ashland before opening UMAC play at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at Minnesota-Morris.

St. Scholastica will open its season — and UMAC play — at 1 p.m. March 6 against Bethany Lutheran in Mankato, Minnesota. The Saints were 16-9 overall and 7-1 in conference play in 2019. They return sophomore outside hitter Jessica Remer, who was second in 2019 with 259 kills, senior middle blocker Madissen Burns, fourth with 146 kills and sophomore Katie Brostrom, second with 373 set assists.
