COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD: Odessa College furloughs track, cross country programs

Jun. 14—The Odessa College Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track teams will be furloughed beginning in the fall the school announced Monday.

The move comes as the school moves forward with its strategic master plan, Vision 2030.

Part of that plan includes resurfacing the current track with an all-weather surface, installing artificial turf inside the track and a $15 million expansion of student, campus housing.

"These improvements will be integral in re-establishing a national competitive track and field program that will attract talented student-athletes from all over the world," Wranglers athletic director Wayne Baker said in the release.

"Current cross country and track student-athletes may remain at OC where their existing scholarships will be honored, or they will be granted a release to attend and compete at other institutions if they so choose."

The Wranglers dominated the NJCAA Track and Field scene in the 1980s, winning seven outdoor national championships and five indoor national championships during that span.
