COLLEGE SPORTS ROUNDUP: Former Gruver standout Bailey Maupin leads Lady Raiders to win over Mercer

LAS VEGAS — Bailey Maupin continues to put the ball in the basket in her first year competing at the collegiate level of women’s basketball.

The former Gruver standout finished with a career-best 27 points, while Jasmine Shavers chipped in a career-high 21, to help Texas Tech down Mercer 78-66 on Saturday to finished undefeated in the Las Vegas Invitational.

It marked the sixth game of Maupin’s career with the Lady Raiders (5-1), who are in the midst of a four-game winning streak. Maupin, who scored 16 of her 27 in the second half, helped notched her third straight start and broke the school record for most makes in a game without miss at 13.

The contest was closer than the final margin as Texas Tech was clinging onto a 61-60 advantage with 7:45 left in the fourth quarter. The Lady Raiders turned things around by forging a 17-6 run that increased the scoring gap to 12 points (78-66) en route to the victory.

Erin Houpt finished with a game-high 28 points for Mercer (2-3).

Texas Tech, which made 34-of-38 free throws, is slated to host Alabama State (0-4) at 7 p.m. Thursday with the contest slated to be streamed online on ESPN+. The game christens and eight-game homestand that includes the Big 12 opener set for 2 p.m. Dec. 31 against Iowa State.

WT women’s basketball

CANYON — Three players finished with double-double performances as the No. 2 Lady Buffs routed Oklahoma Panhandle State 92-49 on Saturday at the First United Bank Center.

Sierra Lenz led the way, scoring 23 points to go along with 10 rebounds while Hollie Stalder (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Braylyn Dollar (11 points, 13 rebounds) rounded out the stellar on-court play for West Texas A&M (6-0).

Former Wellington standout Kyla Kane ended the night with 12 points to complete the list of Lady Buffs ending in double figures.

WT jumped out to a 26-10 lead in the first quarter before taking an 46-20 advantage at halftime and securing the victory.

The Lady Buffs are slated to host University of Arkansas - Fort Smith, as part of a hoops doubleheader, at 5:30 p.m Thursday.

WT men’s basketball

CANYON — Addison Wallace finished with a double-double (17 points and 11 rebounds) to help the Buffs down Oklahoma Baptist 67-56 on Saturday at the First United Bank Center.

With the victory, WT (2-2) bounced back following a winless start by securing triumphs in its last two contests by downing the Bison (2-3).

Zach Toussaint and Ahamed Mohammed finished with 14 and 13 points, respectively, to round out the Buffs in double figures.

West Texas A&M is slated to host University of Arkansas - Fort Smith (4-2) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
