College softball: CMCC drops tournament opener

May 17—The Mustangs stranded three runners in the top of the seventh and then Nittany Lions broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the bottom half of the inning in the opening round of the USCAA national tournament in DuBois, Pennsylvania.

Meghan Stokes doubled home Makena Wong for the winning run. Penn State Schuylkill advances in the double-elimination tournament, while Central Maine Community College drops into the losers bracket.

The Mustangs scored first when Winthrop High School graduate Maria Dostie's double brought home Monmouth Academy graduate Abby Ferland.

The Nittany Lions tied the game in the bottom of third on a Kaley Walshaw double that scored Alyssa Gerber. All three runs in the game were scored on doubles.

The Mustangs finished with four hits (Dostie, Ferland, Avery Herrick and Emily Wormwood). The Nittany Lions had eight, led by two apiece from Stokes and Morgan Kleckner.

CMCC plays Penn State Hazelton on Tuesday at 10 a.m. The winner of that game plays again later in the day, at 6 p.m. If the Mustangs win that game, they face three possible games Wednesday to earn a spot in Thursday's championship, in which they would need to win two games to capture the national title.
