College roundup: St. Cloud wrestling squad finishes fourth at DII championships

ST. LOUIS — St. Cloud State came up short in it quest for a fourth-consecutive NCAA Division II wresting title on Saturday, finishing fourth in the team standings.

Senior Garrett Vos was SCSU's top individual finisher, taking second place at 133 pounds.

Joey Bianchini at 141 and 285-pounder Kameron Teacher both had third-place finishes.

The Huskies ended with 67 team points. Nebraska-Kearney won the team title with 127 points, 41 points ahead of second-place Central Oklahoma.

It was only the second time since 2011 that SCSU didn't finish top-two in the team race. The Huskies have had five titles and four runner-up finishes. They were sixth in 2014.

SCSU women fall in second round of NCAA basketball tournament

St. Cloud State nearly pulled off an upset of No. 1 seed Fort Hays State on Saturday night, leading the host Tigers in the final minute before falling 59-55 in the second round of the women's basketball NCAA Division II Central Region.

A three-pointer from SCSU senior Tori Wortz put the Huskies up 52-51 with 59 seconds remaining, but Lauren West responded with a three-pointer for Fort Hays only 16 seconds later.

The Huskies turned the ball over on their next possession, and West hit another three to push the lead by five with 15 seconds to play. West was zero for four from the field before her two clutch three-pointers.

Wortz added another three to make it a one-score game with 11 seconds remaining, but Fort Hays hit its final two free throws and SCSU couldn't hit another shot as its season came to an end.

Freshman Morgan Draheim led the Huskies with 14 points off the bench after making four of six three-pointers. Senior Nikki Kilboten added 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocks in her final college game. The Huskies finish the year 23-5.

Local swimming and diving, track and field athletes earn All-American honors

St. Cloud State, St. John's and College of St. Benedict all had athletes earn All-American honors at NCAA championships this weekend.

SCSU diver Mady Brinkman followed up a Division II title in the 3-meter dive earlier this week with a fourth-place finish in the 1-meter dive on Saturday.

Sophomore Raf Hendriks broke the school record in the 200-meter backstroke on Saturday morning before finishing fifth overall in the championship heat. Hendriks was also All-American honorable mention for finishing 13th in the 100-meter backstroke on Friday.

SCSU junior Parker Buske was ninth in the long jump at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

College of St. Benedict sophomore Fiona Smith finished third in the Division III the 3,000-meter run one day removed from a fourth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run. She's the first St. Benedict athlete to earn two All-America honors at the same track and field championship meet.

St. John's junior Maguire Petersen was sixth in the pentathlon at the Division III indoor championships to earn All-American status.
