Should college athletes be able to sign endorsement deals?

Lawmakers in California are considering a bill called the Fair Pay to Play Act. It would not give California college athletes a salary from their schools, but it would allow them to earn money by signing endorsement deals. Supporters of the bill argue that star athletes generate a tremendous amount of money for the people and systems around them but don't see any profit themselves. Under current NCAA rules, these actions would cost players their amateur status and cause them to be barred from college competition.
