Nearly 40 years after Mr. Miyagi famously taught Daniel LaRusso how to paint a fence and wash a car in the original Karate Kid films, the Miyagi-verse has expanded exponentially, beginning with the release of Cobra Kai, a Netflix original series spin-off of the iconic franchise. The series reunites William Zabka and Ralph Macchio in their breakout roles, while introducing a whole new crew of karate kids.

Premiering in 2018, Cobra Kai has answered the question: What happens to Daniel after his time with Mr. Miyagi? Since their days with Mr. Miyagi, Daniel LaRusso (Macchio), and his peer, Johnny Lawerence (Zabka) have started their own dojos, mentoring a new gang of fighters. Since its conception, the show has re-sparked love for the original films and become one of Netflix’s most streamed series.

Cobra Kai follows three rival dojos: Miyagi-do, Eagle Fang Karate, and Cobra Kai, with each of them teaching new students their own version of the karate way as said students simultaneously navigate the ups and downs of high school. Returning for Season 5, Cobra Kai shows fans that Mr. Miyagi’s teachings continue to inspire the next generation.

Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Season 5 of Cobra Kai.

Is Cobra Kai Returning to Netflix?

Originally a YouTube Original production, Cobra Kai became a Netflix original series in June 2020. Cobra Kai’s Season 4 saw huge success, landing itself as one of the most streamed television shows on the platform following its release. Netflix has officially announced that Cobra Kai Season 5 will be returning to the streaming platform for another round of karate matches.

When Will Cobra Kai Season 5 Be Released?

Netflix began filming Season 5 of Cobra Kai in September 2021 and wrapped in December 2021. In May 2022, Nextflix announced at their Netflix is a Joke festival that Season 5 of Cobra Kai will return on September 9th.

Where Did We Leave Off in Season 4?

In Season 4, Johnny of Eagle Fang Karate and Daniel of Miyagi-do join together to defeat Cobra Kai’s John Kreese (Martin Kove) and Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith). The two rivaling dojos come together to teach the other’s strengths in an effort to overturn Cobra Kai. Despite their training, at the end of Season 4, Cobra Kai is named victor at the All Valley Tournament, meaning the permanent disbanding of Eagle Fan Karate and Miyagi-do.

Who Will Return in Season 5?

Lucky for us, mentors Johnny, Daniel, and Terry and their students, Miguel (Xolo Maridueña), Robby (Tanner Buchanan), Samantha (Mary Mouser), Eli (Jacob Bertrand), and Tory (Peyton List), will all make their return to the Netflix show come September.

Who Will Leave the Cobra Kai Dojo?

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Cobra Kai Season 4.]

After Tory, champion of the All Valley competition, finds out that her mentor Terry paid off the referee and ultimately tainted Tory’s hard-earned title, she might be looking to change her alliances. Similarly, Robby might have his doubts about Cobra Kai after his mistake of mentoring Kenny, who turns out to be a major bully. Both characters are likely to rethink their loyalties in Season 5.

Which New Characters Will We Meet?

On August 9th, it was confirmed that Terry’s student and Karate Kid III’s major villain, Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan) will make a return to the new season of Cobra Kai. “There’s a lot of insanity; if you’re a fan of the franchise, maybe some familiar faces show up, maybe not. There’s going to be a lot of karate,” Deadline reported co-creator John Hurwitz saying in March 2022, teasing the possible return of other previous characters from the franchise.

Will There Be a New Villain in Cobra Kai Season 5?

In Karate Kid III, Mike Barnes was a student of Terry Silver and deemed the “Karate bad boy.” Given that Barnes, one of the major villains of the original films, has been confirmed to return to the Miyagi-verse in the Karate Kid spin-off, there is a high chance that he will cause chaos in Season 5. Aside from the return of the familiar face, Terry Silver will likely have more plans to further take down Miyagi-do and Eagle Fang Karate after Cobra Kai’s victory at the All Valley Tournament.

Is Hillary Swank Going to Join Cobra Kai?

A former student of Mr. Miyagi introduced in 1994’s The Next Karate Kid, Julie Pierce might be joining the gang come Season 5. Deadline reported last April that according to co-creator Hayden Schlossberg, “Anything is possible. Julie Pierce is one of the toys in the toy chest, so we’ll see.”

Added Schlossberg, “I always say if you’re a fan of The Next Karate Kid and you want to see Julie Pierce, who Hilary Swank played, we’re the show to watch to see if that happens.”

Will There Be a Season 6?

Currently, the creators have not confirmed that a Season 6 of Cobra Kai will happen. Hurwitz has acknowledged that he also is unsure how many seasons Cobra Kai has left. “We have an end in mind. How many seasons it takes to get there, we don’t know,” Hurwitz told Deadline in March 2022. “We’re enjoying making it so much. If it gets tiring to us, we’ll stop before that; we have a few more seasons already planned out.”

Even after the departure of Cobra Kai, Hurwitz has confirmed that there is more to come for the Miyagi-verse and beyond. “We’ve got lots of fun in store beyond Cobra Kai, both inside and out of the Miyagiverse. Should have some fun stuff to announce soon,” said Hurwitz.

Cobra Kai Season 4 premieres Friday, September 9th on Netflix.
