Cobb teams sit atop preseason girls basketball rankings

Oct. 26—The road to the state championship in girls basketball could run through Cobb County in three different classifications, according to the preseason rankings compiled by the Sandy's Spiel website.

Campbell sat atop the Class AAAAAAA rankings, as did Kell in Class AAAAAA and Mount Paran Christian in Class A Private.

In each case, the teams are led by an preseason all-state performer.

Campbell (14-4), which advanced to the second round of the Class AAAAAAA state playoffs a year ago, are led by Laila Battle. Kell (25-4) went to the Class AAAAAA state quarterfinals and are led by guard Crystal Henderson, and Mount Paran (23-5), advanced to the second round behind forward Kara Dunn.

Those three were not the only teams from Cobb County in the top 10 of the different classifications.

Defending Class AAAAAAA state champion Marietta, led by all-state guard Chloe Sterling, is opening the season on the heels of Campbell at No. 2 in Class AAAAAAA, while all-state guard Flau'Jae Johnson and Sprayberry will open the year at No. 8 in Class AAAAAA.

It will not take long to find out which team may be the best in the county. Marietta will face Mount Paran Christian on Dec. 7, and Campbell three days later. Kell will face Sprayberry twice during the regular season in the course of Region 6AAAAAA play.
