Cobb crowns seven champions on Day 1

May 14—Harrison's Sully Shelton and Marietta's Kamari Miller entered their final meet as high school competitors with two more head-to-head matchups.

It was Shelton who came out on top in the first race.

Shelton won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 8 minutes, 50.85 seconds to finish 6 seconds ahead of Miller (8:56.86) to win the event Thursday in the Class AAAAAAA state championships at McEachern.

Shelton and Miller have dueled in track and cross country for the last four years, and the duo were set to match one more time Friday in the 1,600. Next year, they will take their rivalry to the Atlantic Coast Conference, with Shelton running at North Carolina and Miller at Syracuse.

Marietta's Jared Fortenberry finished fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 9:14.98.

Overall, Cobb County had seven state champions crowned on the first day of the state championships.

In the girls Class AAAAAAA meet, Harrison's Riley Perlakowski won the 1,600 (5:01.60) and was also part of the Lady Hoyas' victorious 4x800 relay team, joining Riley Curtis, Kate Curtis and Samantha McGarity to run a time of 9:22.42.

It was part of a 1-2-3 Cobb County finish in the relay as Marietta and Hillgrove finished second and third, respectively.

The other girls Class AAAAAAA winner was Walton's Tomisin Adenupe, who won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches.

In the girls Class AAAAAA meet at Carrollton, Pope's Sophie Boice won the 1,600 (5:00.64), while South Cobb's Cyan Green won the shot put (42-6 1/2 ).

The lone boys champion from the Class AAAAAA meet was Pope's Zach Marinko, who won the high jump with a leap of 6-6.
