CMPD makes arrest after following transit van through east Charlotte neighborhoods

A transit van weaved through numerous neighborhoods in east Charlotte while it was followed by several Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department cruisers around noon Friday.

The incident started around 11:30 a.m. Friday, CMPD said officers were following a suspected stolen vehicle. Chopper 9 Skyzoom spotted up to seven police cruisers on the ground following the transit van.

CMPD’s helicopter was also in the air over the van as it meandered up and down streets, sometimes clipping medians and sidewalks areas. The van traveled along major thoroughfares like Sharon Amity Road, The Plaza, and Central Avenue, in addition to meandering through several neighborhoods.

At about 12:30 p.m., officers cornered the van on Vernedale Drive. Officers were spotted breaking a window to get access to the van. One person was seen being put in handcuffs. That suspect hasn’t been identified yet.
