Jaffa Shriners visit students

For decades, local Jaffa Shriners have been providing tickets to second grade students at Meyersdale Area Elementary School. This year, 56 students will be attending the 82nd annual Jaffa Circus on Oct. 21.

Ed Gnagey and Jim Raupach visited with students on Sept. 23, to present tickets and share the mission and work of the Shriners. Each year, second-grade students are provided with tickets to the circus, along with a free coloring/program book, popcorn and a drink during their visit to the circus.

Gnagey said Meyersdale Area Elementary School is one of the longest-attending schools in the region and said the local Shriners have been offering tickets to local second-graders for more than 60 years.

Jennifer Sines, second grade teacher, said this has become a tradition for the second grade students and adults alike.

“Our second grade students here at Meyersdale Elementary, have had the opportunity to go to the circus for many decades and we are grateful for the continued partnership with our local Shriners organization who make this trip possible. The students have so much fun every year.”

Students work in Positive Painting Project

A group of eighth grade students worked with Amanda Harrington and Kelsey Senft Friday morning, to participate in a collaboration with The Positive Painting Project based in Pittsburgh.

Students attended a brief presentation that explained The Positive Painting Project, the importance of checking in on others and overall mental health awareness, and various coping strategies that can be used when students are struggling emotionally. Following the presentation, students were able to paint a canvas, which will be sent to The Positive Painting Project, have a positive message screen-printed on the front, and then be returned for display throughout the building.

Zach Vena helped find funding to complete this project and Egal allowed the project to use her room and art supplies while also providing art advice during the event.
