All clear issued for Good Sam after police investigate sound of gunshots

Oct. 3—Lafayette police have issued an all clear after investigating a report of what sounded like gunfire near Good Samaritan Medical Center on Monday afternoon.

According to a tweet from the Lafayette Police Department's account, no signs of an incident were found in the building, 200 Exempla Circle in Lafayette, which has been reopened.

A call of shots fired inside the hospital came in at 2:22 p.m., according to Lafayette police.

Lafayette police Deputy Chief Brian Rosipajla said someone in the hospital reported hearing 18 to 20 gunshots, prompting a large police response from surrounding agencies. He didn't know in which area of the hospital the person who heard the shots was.

Police searched all of the hospital's floors, including the basement and the roof, but found no evidence of shots fired or a shooter, he said. During the search, the hospital as well as the surrounding buildings were locked down, but not evacuated.

"We're just glad nothing was actually going on in the hospital," he said. "This is the best outcome."

He said he doesn't believe the person who reported the shots was acting with ill intent, noting the person remained on scene and was interviewed by investigators.

According to a Facebook post from the medical center, its emergency department has temporarily been placed on divert status to keep ambulances from bringing new patients to the area.

This is a developing story.
