Class B Roundup: L/L-M and Carrington avoid R3 tourney upset bids

May 24—The Region 3 baseball tournament got off to an early start with the top-seeded LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Loboes taking on the No.5-seeded South Border Mustangs at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 23. The Loboes (11-1) avoided the misstep, getting a 7-5 win over the Mustangs (3-8).

The upset minded Mustangs scratched three across in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead before the Loboes got one back in the second to make it 3-1. Despite the Mustangs scoring in the third inning to make it 4-1, the Loboes responded with a three piece to tie it up at four. The Loboes would put the game away in the next two innings scoring three runs to take a 7-4 lead.

In the second game of the day, the No.2-seed Carrington Cardinals defended home field with a 5-4 win over the Sheyenne/New Rockford Rockets.

The Cardinals (6-4) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Noah Paulson was brought home on back-to-back singles from Hudson Schmitz and Lucas Hendrickson to make it 1-0. The Rockets (3-13) scored one in the second and third to take a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. The Cardinals retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth when they managed to score two on three hits and an error to make it 3-2.

The score would stay that way until the sixth when the Cardinals stretched their lead out thanks to a Grady Shipman double followed by a hit by pitch and a single to score Shipman and make it 4-2. Later in the inning Josh Bickett would score to make it a 5-2 game.

The Rockets would attempt to fight back in the top of the seventh when they scored two of their own to cut it to 5-4.

The Cardinals are back in action at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24, when they face the Loboes.

In the first game of the losers bracket, the No.3-seeded Kidder County Wolves used a big first two innings to end the Mustangs season with a 2-0 win.

The Wolves (12-6) kept their season alive by scoring one in the first inning and one in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Despite out-hitting the Wolves, the Mustangs could not put up a crooked number in the loss.

The Wolves now wait for the winner of the losers bracket game between the Rockets and Midkota/Dakota Prairie/Lakota/ Griggs County Central at 3 p.m. on May 24.
