As city enters Memorial Day weekend, COVID-19 numbers continue downturn

WORCESTER — As the city enters Memorial Day weekend, new COVID-19 cases continued their downward trajectory from last week, according to an update of the Worcester Department of Public Health's COVID-19 dashboard.

On Friday, the dashboard reported that the city's seven-day average for new coronavirus cases stands at 64.3, down from 105.6 cases cases a day from the week before.

Over the past seven days, 450 new cases were reported in the city for a total of 58,043 since the start of the pandemic over two years ago.

However, the positivity rate for the past two weeks was recorded at 6.91% Friday, up from 5.35% from the prior week.

Inpatient numbers decreased over the week of May 20, with 93 people hospitalized in the city's health care systems, down three from the previous week.

However, 17 people are in intensive-care unit beds, an increase of four patients.

In addition, an additional death from COVID was reported this week for 537 total Worcester deaths.

Vaccination rates are unchanged from the prior week, with 63% of residents fully vaccinated and 74% have received at least one shot.

Of the fully vaccinated population, 50% have received at least one booster shot.

The concentration of coronavirus detected in Greater Worcester is also seeing a downturn, according to readings recorded Sunday and Monday.
