CIF-SS roundup: Channel Islands boys basketball team earns 1st playoff win since 2000

The Channel Islands High boys basketball program had waited nearly a decade to play in postseason game, and even longer to win one.

The Raiders ended their playoff drought in style on Tuesday night.

With the game tied at 40-40, Channel Islands closed the game with a 21-7 run to defeat host Duarte 61-47 in a CIF-Southern Section Division 5A wild-card game.

Channel Islands, making its first postseason appearance since 2014 and just its third since 2000, won a playoff game for the first time since beating Glendale 78-57 in 2000.

Nazir Ivey finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three steals, Marc Ortiz had 11 points and four rebounds, Franky Tzintzun scored 10 points, Da'shaye Williams had nine rebounds, seven assists and three blocks, and Shaun Holmes added five points for the Raiders.

Channel Islands will play at top-seeded Blair in a first-round game Wednesday night.

Gavin Day finished with 31 points and 10 rebounds, Brady Crawford had seven points, nine rebounds and six assists, Jomari Ong had five points, Joaquin Rodriguez contributed four points and six assists, and Ben Rodriguez four points for host Villanova Prep in its 62-55 loss to Trinity Classical Academy in a Division 4AA wild-card game.

BOYS SOCCER PLAYOFFS

Bohdie Ing and Blake O’Hearn scored goals as Newbury Park won a wild-card round match for the second straight season, 2-0 over visiting Los Osos.

“Los Altos marked us real well,” Newbury Park coach Eric Sanford said. “There was a lot of back and forth. They had a strong counterattack but we were able to shut it down.”

Jaden Griffin, a freshman promoted from JV playing in his first varsity game, had an assist on the game-winning goal in the 70th minute. Another freshman, Tyler Mah, played opposite Griffin on the right wing.

Newbury Park (7-4-4) will play at Anaheim-Canyon on Thursday in a Division 3 first-round match.

Despite a late free kick goal from senior striker Arnulfo Zapeda, Fillmore (10-9-5) fell 3-1 at La Canada in a Division 5 wild-card match.

JP Hernandez scored two goals and Juan Lopez and Adrian Vega had goals to lead Nordhoff beat neighbor Thacher 4-0 in a Division 7 wild-card match. The Rangers will play at United Christian Academy in a first-round match Thursday.

In Division 7 wild-card matches, Ojai Valley fell to Cobalt 4-2 and Newbury Park Adventist was eliminated 4-2 by Vasquez.

GIRLS WATER POLO PLAYOFFS

Abby Block and Kelsee Espitia each scored three goals, Maya Roberts, Juliet Lazowski and Heather Lory had goals, and goalie Kiana Kellner made six saves and had three assists to lead Ventura (20-11) to an 11-6 win over visiting Glendora in a Division 2 wild-card game. The Cougars will play at Arlington in Riverside in a first-round match Wednesday.

Hannah Tully-Giles scored two goals, Candela Basoco had a goal and Ida Tully-Giles made 23 saves for host Villanova Prep in its 21-3 loss to top-seeded JSerra in a Division 3 first-round game.

Addison Bruno finished with five goals and eight steals, Mikayla Salas had a goal and two steals, Gabrielle Swaim had three steals, Jackie Starr had two steals and a field block, Isabella Prewitt had two steals, and goalie Kathryn Salazar had 15 blocks to lead Buena to a 6-3 victory over Carpinteria in a CIF-SS Division 4 first-round game. The Bulldogs will play Flintridge Sacred Heart in a second-round game Thursday.

Royal defeated visiting Culver City 10-7 in a CIF-SS Division 4 first-round game and will play Valley View in a second-round game on Thursday.

Newbury Park lost 15-7 to host West Torrance in a first-round game in Division 4.

Rio Mesa lost 13-8 at top-seeded Alta Loma in a first-round game in Division 4.

Thousand Oaks lost 19-8 to host Arcadia in a first-round game in Division 4.

Izabel Magana finished with six goals and four steals and Lindsey Ramirez had two goals and two assists for Santa Paula (14-13) in its 17-8 loss to host West Covina in a Division 5 first-round game.

Nordhoff lost 5-0 to visiting Warren in a Division 5 first-round game.

Taylor Credle had four goals and eight steals and Riya Korde finished with four goals and five steals to lead top-seeded Calabasas to an 11-6 win over Saddleback in a Division 6 wild-card game. The Coyotes will play Jurupa Valley in a first-round game Wednesday.
