CHS's Brooklyn Calder to participate in Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade

Carlsbad High School student Brooklyn Calder, who is a member of the Carlsbad High School cheerleading squad, will represent this community in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Honolulu at an event Dec. 4 through Dec. 9. According to a press release, cheerleaders and dancers invited to perform are part of a select group of All-Americans identified at various Varsity Spirit summer camps across the country. Only 12 percent of participants are selected. Carlsbad High School attended camp in Albuquerque this past July.

According to the press release, All-Americans are selected based on superior cheerleading or dance skills as well as leadership skills at the camps.

Brooklyn and other participants will perform prior to the opening ceremony of the parade and then participate in the parade itself. The parade theme is “remembering the past and celebrating the future,” and everyone invited will participate in a visit to the Pearl Harbor Memorial and the USS Missouri Battleship. The trip marks the 81st Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Congratulations to Brooklyn Calder on being selected for this incredible honor.

We’ve received word about another Carlsbad team who competed in the 3V3 Live National Championships soccer tournament last week in Florida. Congratulations to the SuperSonics Soccer Club members: Bria Franco, Jax Aguilera, Carter Bussell, Kieran Fuentez, Rylan Franco, and Vivian Zhao for representing Carlsbad and the surrounding area, as well as to Coach Jaime Aguilera. This is a very exclusive, highly competitive tournament.

There’s a new substance abuse program again available in Southeast New Mexico. According to a press release, the New Mexico Rehabilitation Center in Roswell has resumed its Intensive Outpatient Program for substance treatment. We have excellent programs in Carlsbad, such as those offered by LifeHouse, but the more programs made available in our region the better.

This program consists of three hour treatment groups per day, three days a week. For more information, please call 575-347-3440.

On Tuesday, we attended a memorial service for Tony Guevara Jr., who was the owner of Pest and Weed Control in Carlsbad and who was very well known and loved across the entire community. He especially enjoyed spending time at his grandkid’s sporting events. We offer our condolences to Tony’s many family and friends, and thank Pastor Gabe Rubio for conducting a very moving memorial service.
