Chinese Paralympic athlete Zhou Xia sets world record in the women’s 100-meter race in Tokyo

Chinese Paralympian Zhou Xia, who had to overcome muscular atrophy as a result of a car accident, broke the world record in the women’s 100-meter race at the Tokyo Paralympic Games.
Breaking the record: Zhou Xia, 22, took back the world record title with a time of 13 seconds as she took home the gold in the women’s 100 meters T35 race on Aug. 27, according to the state-run People’s Daily Online.
The previous world record was held by Australian runner Isis Holt, who completed the 100-meter race in 13.43 seconds in 2017.
Before Holt, Zhou had claimed the title in 2016 at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics Games with a time of 13.66 seconds, as noted in her Olympic profile. The runner won both the 100-meter and 200-meter events at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
After the race, Zhou said she was “super excited” about winning and did not expect herself “to be this fast.”
The Chinese Olympic Committee tweeted their support as she brought home their tenth gold medal.
“All my hard work paid off. I want to thank everyone for their support and I will work harder to fight for my country,” the young runner stated.
