China's biggest air show opens with aerobatics display

STORY: Four domestically developed J-20 stealth fighter jets streaked by in close formation to kick off the show, and aircraft navigated by members of the country's People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force later put on an aerobatic display before a crowd wearing N-95 masks outdoors.

Chinese planemaker COMAC's C919, a narrow-body passenger jet designed to challenge the Airbus-Boeing duopoly, was also in the show's flying display for the first time, performing sharp 45 degree turns.

China has aimed for increased self-reliance in the aerospace industry and the show comes amid rising tensions between China and Taiwan after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei in August, sparking huge Chinese military exercises in the area at a time when the world is also on edge over the conflict in Ukraine.
