7-year-old living in domestic violence shelter breaks hearts with Christmas wish: 'Can you do that?'

A child living in a domestic violence shelter is going viral after his mom discovered his heart-wrenching message for Santa Claus.

The 7-year-old, named Blake, lives at SafeHaven of Tarrant County, a shelter for victims of domestic violence. He and his mom have been at the shelter since around Thanksgiving, Today reported.

Blake's holiday wishlist, which was apparently stashed inside his school backpack, was posted on SafeHaven's Facebook page Wednesday, with the shelter withholding the family's last name in order to ensure their safety.

"Dear Santa," Blake's letter begins. "We had to leave our house. Dad was mad. We had to do all the chores. Dad got everything he wanted. Mom said it was time to leave and she would take us to a safer place where we don't have to be scared."

"I'm still nervous. I don't want to talk to the other kids," the note continues. "Are you going to come this Christmas? We don't have any of our stuff here. Can you bring some chapter books, a dictionary, and a compass and a watch? I also want a very very very good dad. Can you do that too?"

The post featuring Blake's tragic-yet-touching letter has been shared more than 1,200 times and covered by multiple news outlets. Kathryn Jacob, the president and CEO of SafeHaven, said she's been shocked by the coverage, as, unfortunately, she sees meets children in similar circumstances so often.

"We never anticipated it would get the kind of attention that it has gotten," Jacob told Today. "To us, it was kind of a story that we've heard all the time."

Jacob added that the shelter has received an influx of donations in the past few days, including enough to ensure Blake will get every gift on his list. Additionally, the post drew hundreds of Facebook commenters, many of whom expressed their own heartbreak after reading Blake's letter.

"Dear, Blake. I heart you, baby. I once had to leave home with my kids too. But when your mom is brave enough to take you to a safe place, she will do what she can to make you happy and keep you safe. Thank you for being so amazing, brave and wonderful," one commenter wrote.

"He can come stay with me for Christmas!" another offered, echoing a sentiment shared by many Facebook users.
