Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes shouldered blame for loss to Titans

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered their worst loss of the 2021 NFL season with a 27-3 defeat at the hands of the Tennessee Titans in Week 7.

You have to go back nearly a decade to find the last time the Chiefs scored just three points in a game. It’s something that has simply been unheard of during the Andy Reid era of Chiefs football.

After the game, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes didn’t mince his words when speaking to reporters about the loss. He took complete ownership over the offensive failure this week, also explaining that the struggles in Kansas City haven’t been one overarching problem. At the end of the day, he felt that he didn’t put his team in a good situation from the get-go this week.

“It has kind of been one thing here and there, each and every week,” Mahomes explained. “It’s not like a whole overarching one thing. I mean, today it was probably me, just pressing a little bit too early in the game. And then we got down and we were kind of in the mode where we were no-huddle, which you don’t want to be in in the NFL. You can execute a little bit, but it’s hard to sustain drives.”

Mahomes went just 5-of-9 for 59 yards with two turnovers in the first half. They were shut out with a 27-point deficit and even though the Titans didn’t score again, the damage was done that sealed the Chiefs’ fate. Mahomes wouldn’t score a touchdown in the game and would finish it with a passer rating of 62.3, the worst mark of his career for a regular-season game.

He’ll have a chance to get right in prime time in Week 8 against the New York Giants, and he knows exactly what he needs to do to ensure that a game like this doesn’t happen again.

“I’ve just got to be better early in the games so we don’t get behind like we did today,” Mahomes concluded.
