Chiefs grounds crew already preparing training camp practice fields in St. Joseph

We don’t yet know the exact dates for Kansas City Chiefs training camp, but preparations are already underway in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Chiefs head groundskeeper Travis Hogan recently posted a video of his team doing some work at the practice fields at the Missouri Western State University campus. This is the second year that he’s given us an update around this time, teasing the preparation of the grass practice fields in St. Joseph.

Hogan says they’re doing what is called a “fraze mow.” Basically, this type of mowing removes any detrimental organic matter that has accumulated on the top layer of the grass during the colder months of the year. That organic matter prevents positive grass growth when the weather warms up. Doing this will encourage new grass growth over the next few months ahead of training camp.

Typically, training camp arrives in late July for the Chiefs with a schedule announcement in mid-to-late June. Roughly 15 public practices take place during the morning hours for two or more hours over the course of a few weeks. Most practices are free, but fans are usually required to reserve tickets in advance.

This will be the 12th training camp in franchise history held in St. Joseph at Missouri Western State. Kansas City has two option years remaining on their contract with the school, so expect a new agreement to come together soon to guarantee this as the continued home of Chiefs training camp.
