Shelby County Health Department headquarters cleared by hazmat after suspected chemical spill

The Shelby County Health Department's headquarters will be closed for the remainder of Friday to investigate a suspected chemical spill.

The spill was suspected to have taken place in a section of the building that is not open to the public according to a statement from the department. The department did not disclose what chemical spilled Friday afternoon, and the building would ultimately be cleared by a hazmat team from the Memphis Fire Department.

"The building was evacuated in an abundance of caution after a suspected chemical spill was found in part of the building not open to the public," a press release read. "The substance was determined by Hazmat to be non-hazardous."

All other Health Department locations will be open, but the headquarters will remain closed Friday, followed by a Monday closure for Memorial Day.
