Chef David Chang becomes first celebrity to win top prize on US 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?'

Chef David Chang attempted to become the first celebrity to win $1 million for charity on the US version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? at the weekend. He was playing for the Southern Smoke Foundation, which supplies emergency relief funds to food and beverage workers.

The final question was “Although he and his wife never touched a light switch for fear of being shocked, who was the first president to have electricity in the White House?” The answer options provided were Ulysses S. Grant, Benjamin Harrison, Chester A. Arthur and Andrew Johnson.

Chang did not know the answer, but he hoped his “phone a friend” lifeline might. He called NFL analyst Mina Kimes for assistance. She wasn’t overly confident in her answer saying, "It's probably Harrison."

After deliberating with what Chang described as a “painful,” “nervous” and “terrifying” decision, he decided to go with her suggestion. She, and by that right he, was correct.

“David Chang makes history,” exclaimed host Jimmy Kimmel. “The first celebrity contestant to win a million dollars for his charity on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?... You see that? Good things do happen sometimes.”

While there have been dozens of celebrities who have played for charities over the past 20 years, Chang was the first to win. If Chang had answered the question wrong, he would have dropped from $500,000 to $32,000. Kimmel told him he had “metallic testicles” for going with an answer he did not know.
